On March 3, 2026, the Israel Ministry of Defense and the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems reported that the Iron Beam high-energy laser weapon system saw its debut use, successfully hitting an incoming aerial target, believed to be a Hezbollah drone or rocket, launched from southern Lebanon, targeting northern Israel.
The interception had occurred in the early morning of the day at the border town of Metula. One such short, grainy video that went viral on social media (which was since confirmed by Israeli military officials and defense analysts) depicts a clear, long, and steady beam of laser fired out of a ground-based installation, targeting and incinerating the on-course projectile in a few seconds. The video shows the typical flash and explosion of the target, and there is no explosion or fallout of any debris—a typical directed-energy kill.
The Iron Beam is a rail-mounted fiber laser, also called Iron Beam, invented by Rafael with the Israel Ministry of Defence and Elbit Systems in collaboration to vaporize and destroy short-range missiles such as rockets, mortars, drones, and loitering munitions at the cost of only a fraction of conventional interceptors, such as Iron Dome missiles, at between 2 and 3 dollars per shot and 50000100,000 dollars, respectively.
These advanced tests on the system have been initiated since 2022, and initial operational capability is expected at the end of 2025. The use of the SUNDAY was the first known full-energy laser weapon use on an active world conflict zone against a live aerial target.
The Israeli officials referred to the debut as a game-changer in air defense, and Iron Beam can supplement Iron
Dome economically by dealing with low-cost and high-volume threats. In a statement made by the Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, the Iron Beam has undergone testing in real warfare. This is where the defense is heading: accurate, quick, and cheap.
The arrival of the video has raised the world's curiosity and questions about the future of directed-energy weapons, and analysts refer to it as a milestone just like that achieved through the use of radar-guided missiles or the Iron Dome itself. Official comment on the attack by Hezbollah has not been made yet, but pro-Iranian outlets said it was a small swarm and minimized the interception.
With tensions still high on the northern border of Israel, the success of Iron Beam in its combat debut is likely to hasten deployment plans and drive directed-energy programs across the globe and even in the US, in India, and in China.
