Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has criticized a recent flood of auto-generated fake photographs on the Internet, some allegedly posted by her political opponents in an attempt to defame her.
On Tuesday, Meloni posted on Facebook one of the deepfake pictures of her lying on a bed in lingerie. She decisively branded it a fake and jokingly told the authors that they had enhanced her beauty.
The user wrote that several fake photos of him originated due to artificial intelligence and were claimed to be real. She emphasized that deepfakes are dangerous as they can be used to deceive and manipulate anyone and added, "Today it comes to me; tomorrow it can be said to anyone.
The event highlights the increased worries about the misuse of AI in politics. Meloni reminded the citizens to always question before believing and sharing content. The Italian leader is not the first one to encounter digitally distorted images, which illustrates the more general issues of deepfake technology in the digital age.
The reaction expressed so candidly has led to the spread of the concept of digital ethics and online disinformation through social media.
