An ugly instance of so-called dowry harassment has also been reported in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, when a viral video was filmed of a woman being mercilessly beaten by her father-in-law. The elder man, who is known as Sushil Dubey, a retired railway worker, can be heard screaming as he pulls her by the hair, whacking her without mercy, and goes as far as tearing her clothes, crying out, "Maa bachao, maar rha hai" and "Help, they will kill me."

The woman claimed that the rape was due to the request of Rs 20 lakh cash and 2 bighas of land. According to reports, the father-in-law, along with other family members, attacked her when she refused to fulfill the illegal dowry demands.

The outrageous video, causing a furor on social media, depicts the attendees who are reluctant to act. The police have filed a case in accordance with the provisions of the IPC and Dowry Prohibition Act. Top officials such as the ACP have attested that the video clearly shows the attack, and an inquiry is being conducted. The case has once more brought to light the endemic nature of dowry violence in the community.
