The ambitious Mumbai Metro Line 5 and 5A project, at a cost of ₹18,130.55 crore, has been given a final nod by the Maharashtra government. The paid-off 34.21 km long corridor and 19 stations will change connectivity within the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan-Ulhasnagar belt and serve the needs of almost 69 lakh people.
The network is comprised of Line 5 (Thane to Kalyan via Bhiwandi) and its extension Line 5A (11.83 km with 7 stations between Durgadi and Aadharwadi, Khadakpada to Kalyan, and all the way to Ulhasnagar). It also has interchanges with other metro lines and is anticipated to shorten the travel time up to 40-50%.
It is a major infrastructure initiative by CM Devendra Fadnavis, a project that is being implemented by MMRDA. Work has already begun on sections of Line 5, with the entire system forecasting monumental relief to daily commuters in the highly populated eastern suburbs.
