The Indian government also has commissioned a major move towards Atmanirbhar Bharat within the aerospace industry, with the purchase of eight Dornier 228 NG (Next Generation) aircraft being approved by the government for Hindustan Aerospace Limited (HAL). These completely made-in-India aircraft will be delivered to the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard as the finalized decision will be completed by late February 2026 to carry out maritime reconnaissance and surveillance as well as transport.

The Dornier 228 NG has a state-of-the-art glass cockpit, enhanced fuel consumption, and the capacity to carry more passengers, in addition to improved short-takeoff-and-landing (STOL) performance, which is ideal for operation on small island airstrips and coastal bases. The new order is an improvement of the previous order by incorporating better engines and mission machinery, and this is not the first time that HAL has supplied the Indian armed forces and the paramilitary groups with more than 30 Dornier 228 aircraft in recent years.

This contract will have a value of several hundred crores and will also cover technology transfer, local content promises of above 90, and long-term maintenance support by HAL. The acquisition enhances the local aviation industry in India, establishes high-technology employment in Uttar Pradesh, and avoids reliance on foreign vendors of key maritime patrol assets.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh described the move as a source of pride for Make in India because the Dornier program has been developed into a fully indigenous production rather than being a licensed production. The planes will amplify the surveillance power of the Indian Ocean region as more security concerns arise in the ocean.

The Chairman and Managing Director of HAL, C.B. Ananthakrishnan, validated that they have the production lines in place and that they will start their first deliveries in between 18 and 24 months. The order gets added to the increasing order book of HAL, which has Tejas Mk1A fighters, LCH Prachand helicopters, and other platforms.

The procurement supports the strategic defense aviation self-reliance of India coupled with improving the operational preparedness of the Navy and Coast Guard. The Dornier deal is a bright example of successful indigenization of the public sector and thus of the successful innovation and implementation process, as the country is on the way to more indigenization.
