The Malaysian government is reportedly planning to take strong measures against tech giant Meta due to a rampant problem of fake accounts being generated on its platforms. Recently the communications ministry was worried by the number of fake accounts and the dissemination of fake information, communal hatred, and public opinion manipulation.
There are repeated complaints against the issue, but officials said that Meta didn't do enough to resolve the issue. Police are now considering lawsuits, potentially against the offenders for fines, to remove the content from their websites, or to enforce stricter compliance with Malaysian legislation.
The development comes as a move that's as coincidental as ever before in the world that's being watched closely on social media networks around how it's allowing bot farms and impersonators. Malaysian authorities also pointed out that the fake accounts are a direct threat to national unity or the upcoming elections.
Meta is yet to officially comment. The action could be used as a template by other Southeast Asian countries that struggle with the same issues involving fake IDs and digital manipulation. The government has emerged proactively on the issue, which has received a favorable response from the citizens.
