Kolkata: On Wednesday, the political crisis in West Bengal escalated to a higher level as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remained adamant in stepping down despite the BJP clearly winning the 2026 Assembly elections.

The governor has made a formal request for Mamata to demonstrate, within a 48-hour period, a majority or a situation whereby she has tendered a resignation. Top BJP stooges have threatened statewide protests in case she does not resign.

According to the legal analysts, the situation is leading to a constitutional crisis. Some petitions ought to be filed in the Calcutta High Court and ultimately the Supreme Court, seeking guidelines for a floor test in the Assembly.

According to sources, the center is closely following the situation and has not disqualified the possibility of imposing President’s Rule in the event the stalemate prevails. TMC employees have resorted to demonstrations in favor of Mamata, blaming the Election Commission and Governor as biased.

The next 48-72 hours will prove to be a critical time to watch as political temperatures could rise all across the state, with the potential of high-stakes negotiations, court battles, and street demonstrations.
