On February 22, 2026, the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) of Shatabdi Nagar station in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi (the first innovation in urban transportation in India). The project completed the entire 82 km Delhi-Meerut corridor, the first Regional Rapid Transit System in India, whose speed is up to 180 km/h and which, at a 160 km/h frequency, can cover the distance between Delhi and Meerut in less than 60 mins.

Namo Bharat trains are the fastest regional rail service in the country that, though focused on linking the major stations of this country, does not have any route connecting other major stations such as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut South. With a top speed of 120 km/h (the fastest metro in India), the 23 km Meerut Metro, which runs parallel on parts of the route, has elevated the intra-city movement of passengers with a liaison period of approximately 30 minutes linking Meerut South to Modipuram.

PM Modi opened up some delayed portions, including a 5 km path in Delhi (Sarai Kale Khan to New Ashok Nagar) and a 21 km (Meerut South to Modipuram) forging in Uttar Pradesh. He inaugurated various developments with an overall investment of around 12,930 crore (approximately 13,000 crore) in Meerut, such as improvement of infrastructure, and also traveled by the metro, engaging the students and commuters.

It is a glimpse of the Viksit Bharat, Modi noted, so that the project will expedite the twin-city vision, so that daily commuting is quicker, the congestion in the NCR is lessened, and the economy will grow because the lakhs of residents and workers will have access to easier means of commuting. Developed by NCRTC at a total cost of more than 30,000 crore for the entire system, passenger service commenced at another 6 pm on the same day.

The launch focuses on the interest of government in high-speed infrastructure on a global level, which sets a precedent for future RRTS corridors in India and alters the railway transportation in the National Capital Region.
