On April 27, a 50-year-old tribal man, Jeetu Munda (also known as Jitu Munda), from the village of Dianali in the Keonjhar district in eastern India, brought his dead sister's skeleton to the Maliposi branch of Odisha Grameen Bank in a bizarre and tragic case.
Jeetu’s sister, Kalra (or Kakra) Munda, was 56-62 years old and passed away on January 26, 2026. Jeetu had been trying to withdraw the remaining balance of approximately Rs 19,300-20,000 from her account for several weeks. He claims the bank demanded that he bring the account holder (his sister) or submit legal documents, which were not available.
After visiting several times, Jeetu went to the cremation ground, dug up her skeletons, wrapped them in cloth, and, during the noon heat, traveled almost 3 km back to the bank. Then he put the skeleton down and asked for the money.
Officials and police intervened, pacified him, and assured him that he could withdraw the money through legal channels. The clip has generated discussion on banking policies in rural areas in India and lack of awareness in tribal regions.
