OpenAI Declares War on Apple: Massive Lawsuit Looms Over 'Failed' ChatGPT Deal!

Apple's lackluster performance as a ChatGPT subscriber is raising legal wrangling between the two tech giants as OpenAI continues to investigate the matter. Apple's rollout alongside ChatGPT has not filled their subscriber rolls as OpenAI had hoped, prompting the company to pursue legal action. As frustrations mount, the AI company can issue a breach notice.

Apple's high-profile partnership with OpenAI, which brought ChatGPT to Siri and Apple's devices, is reportedly being defended in a legal battle with the AI firm. OpenAI is apparently preparing for a legal confrontation with Apple over its high-profile partnership, which saw the firm's AI capabilities, including ChatGPT, incorporated into Apple's Siri and devices.

Bloomberg reports that the partnership has soured, and OpenAI doesn't feel the arrangement has garnered the anticipated boost in the speed of adoption and subscribers.

The announcement of the partnership happened in 2024 and included setting up ChatGPT functions on iOS that would allow it to become accessible to hundreds of millions of customers. Since Apple hasn’t made the integration easy enough, though, according to OpenAI's executives, the device hasn't caught on enough nor yielded particularly promising turns with $20M in revenue. The standalone ChatGPT app is reportedly easier to use than the cumbersome Siri version.

OpenAI has now engaged an outside firm to look into that and is considering filing a notice of breach of contract with Apple. There is no surety a full lawsuit would be filed at this time, but there are bound to be tensions. As for Apple, OpenAI's privacy practices and talent poaching are matters of concern for Apple.

Here's a snapshot of the difficulties in emerging big tech-AI partnerships. In upcoming iOS releases, Apple is reportedly opening up to the use of other AI models, including Google Gemini and Anthropic's Claude. It's still a dynamic situation; no lawsuit has been filed yet, but it does signal changing dynamics in the AI field.

Any developments of this high-stakes matter won't be lost on industry observers, as it pits two of tech's largest giants against one another.
