Mumbai: In a horrific incident, four people of a family were killed after eating watermelons late at night on April 25 in Pydhonie. Abdullah Dokadia, 40; his wife Nasreen, 35; and daughters Ayesha, 16, and Zainab, 13, invited guests for chicken pulao. Dokadia and his family had watermelon around 1 AM after guests departed, and they fell ill with vomiting, dizziness, and a stomach ache. They died hours later despite treatment.
Other family members not present avoided the watermelon. Mumbai Police have registered an accidental death and are awaiting reports on the tests being conducted on food and fruit samples to check if the chemical or improper ripening was responsible for the tragedy. Postmortem reports are awaited. The death has prompted a safety alert about fruits in the city.
The government has issued an advisory to be careful with cut fruits and is launching an inquiry.
