On April 26, 2026, fear and chaos gripped Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport in the early hours as SWISS International Airlines flight LX147 bound for Zurich took off and then had to abort the takeoff due to an engine fire. The Airbus A330, with 228 on board (four infants), was on the runway around 1:08 am taking off when the accident happened.
Takeoff was aborted, and a slide evacuation commenced. Emergency services were immediately called, and the fire was extinguished. Eight passengers were hurt during the evacuation and taken to a private hospital nearby. A pilot was reportedly injured with a sprained ankle.
SWISS apologized and said all passengers had been evacuated. Delhi Airport said it raised the alarm but quickly returned to normal. The incident seemed to cause serious damage to the aircraft. Airports Council International India has launched an investigation into the engine problem. Flight passengers have commended the flight crew for preventing a devastating disaster.
