Washington/New Delhi: Former US President Donald Trump on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the spectacular victory of the BJP in the 2026 elections in West Bengal (assembly).

Trump celebrated the outcome in a phone call where he hailed the result as a great victory and he bragged about the strong mandate that the BJP got. Sources reported that Trump had informed Modi that the win gave what the people wanted to be given: development and good governance.

Prime Minister Modi has thanked Trump with his warm greetings and has reiterated how India and the US need strong ties. It is the second major international congratulatory call that a post-verdict recipient, Modi, has received following the Bengal verdict.

This development is amidst the political drama that is going on in Kolkata, where Mamata Banerjee has declined to resign. The message by Trump has been greatly disseminated by the BJP leaders as a significant diplomatic enhancement.
