Netflix recently announced a significant change in its policy regarding password sharing in India. The company now explicitly states that a Netflix account is intended for use by one household, and only those living in the same household can use it for free. This means that sharing your Netflix account with individuals who don't reside in your home is no longer permitted. Violating this policy may result in a warning or even the suspension of your account. Netflix employs various methods, including monitoring device IP addresses, account activity, and registered Wi-Fi networks, to ensure compliance with this rule.
Temporary Access for Short Holidays
While Netflix restricts sharing with non-household members, it does allow for some flexibility. If you go on a short holiday, you can still access your Netflix account from a different location. However, if you're away from your home for an extended period (more than a month), Netflix will send you a reminder email regarding its password sharing policy. In such cases, you can update your account's main household location to inform the company that it is still your account and not being used by non-household members.
Sharing with Friends - A Monthly Requirement
If you intend to share your Netflix account with a friend, there's a catch. Your friend must visit your home at least once a month and use Netflix with your Wi-Fi network to continue using the account for free. This requirement is in place to ensure that the account remains within the confines of your household and is not shared with external individuals.
Limitations Based on Plan
Lastly, it's essential to note that the number of users you can share your account with depends on your subscription plan. The Premium plan, priced at Rs 649, allows sharing with up to three members. The Standard plan supports two devices, while the Basic plan allows access on only one device. Additionally, the Mobile plan provides access exclusively on your phone and tablet. In summary, Netflix's updated policy in India emphasizes that account sharing is limited to the members of the same household. While some flexibility exists for short holidays, sharing with friends requires them to use your home network regularly. Be aware of your plan's limitations when sharing your Netflix account, and ensure compliance with the new rules to avoid any account disruptions.
