The poll of the 126 Assembly constituencies of Assam ended on April 9, 2026, with a daunting estimated voter turnout of 85.64, the highest in Assam electoral history. This is compared to the previous record of 84.67 in 2016 and 82.04 in 2021, a huge turnout of over 2.5 crore electors even in the face of rain in some regions and isolated cases of violence resulting in the injury of approximately 30 electors.
The BJP-led NDA and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma termed the turnout historic and attributed it to the confidence of people and development activities. Congress and leaders of the opposition saw the large numbers as a possible change wave, whereas others were concerned by potential irregularities and problems at the booth.
A slight difference in participation resulted in women voters participating slightly more than men. The greatest turnouts were recorded in such districts as South Salmara-Mankachar and such constituencies as Dalgaon. The Election Commission described the polling as quite peaceful with increased security.
The outcome will come on May 4, and this large voter turnout has started speculation about the hotly fought power struggle in Assam. The end-confirmed numbers can be slightly modified post-consolidation.
