In the midst of the heated debate on the Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha on March 30, 2026, BJP MP K. Laxman today accused some of the opposition-ruled states, including Karnataka, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Telangana, of misusing the reservation policy for the Other Backward Classes by including a large number of Muslims in the OBC reservations in the Rajya Sabha today. He is also the national president of the BJP OBC Morcha.
Laxman also spoke about the case of Karnataka, in which all Muslims were considered one caste and had a special quota of 4% reservations. He spoke about the case of West Bengal, in which 97% Muslim communities were included in the list of OBCs. He spoke about the case of Tamil Nadu, in which Muslims comprised nearly 95% OBC castes. He also spoke about the cases of Kerala and Telangana. He said, "This is robbing the rightful share of the socially and educationally backward castes, mostly Hindus."
The members of the opposition party protested against this statement of Laxman and left the assembly hall as they were not given a chance to speak against the statement. JP Nadda, the house leader, criticized the members of the opposition party. Once again, the debate regarding reservations based on castes and religion is in the spotlight due to this statement by Laxman.
