The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the electronic voting machines (EVMs) of being tampered with in the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections held on April 29, 2026. BJP leaders, including the IT cell head, Amit Malviya, have claimed that several voting booths in the Falta assembly constituency—which is in Abhishek Banerjee's Diamond Harbour fiefdom in South 24 Parganas—had the button for the party's lotus symbol taped off with white tape.
The BJP's clip from polling stations like Harindanga High School purportedly displays the tape blocking the BJP button, prohibiting voters from voting in favor of the party. The party has called it a clear attempt to rig the elections and sought for repolling to be carried out in all the booths.
West Bengal's chief electoral officer has said that if reports of taping EVM buttons are true, it will be confirmed in a ground survey, and repolling will be ordered. Trinamool Congress has accused the opposition of making a furphy.
This has added to the political infighting in the state on the eve of the results. The incident led to polling being suspended at some polling stations.
