Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stepped down on April 14, 2026. In an unprecedented political change in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ran for an unprecedented ten terms in nearly 20 years. Recently elected Rajya Sabha MP Kumar presented his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain at Lok Bhavan, Patna, suggesting a dissolution of the Council of Ministers.

Several hours after that, the BJP Legislature Party unanimously voted Samrat Choudhary as its leader, thus making him the first-ever Bharatiya Janata Party chief minister of Bihar. A prominent OBC leader in the party, 57-year-old MLA in Tarapur Choudhary thanked the BJP leadership, promising that under the mentorship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bihar would develop, have good governance, and prosper.

It has not yet disbanded the NDA group, and JD(U) has come up to promise the new government full support. On April 15, 2026, Choudhary will assume office. The development not only marks the end of the long era of Nitish Kumar as a Sushasan in Bihar politics but also makes the future electoral battles in Bihar a stronger battle for the BJP.
