The eagerly awaited vote counting of the Assembly elections in five states and one union territory—West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry—started on Monday, May 4, 2026. Powerful rooms were ceremonially returned in the presence of witnesses, the applicants, and agents of the party among the high security arrangements.
Already, early trends show that the BJP is on the winning front in Assam, with CM Himanta Biswa Sarma comfortably ahead of his opponent, and in West Bengal, with tightly contested contests with BJP gains being reported. In Tamil Nadu, DMK is demonstrating such a lead, and UDF is leading in Kerala. A close fight is also taking place at Puducherry.
The results should be announced later in the day. In the quest to get the result, political parties have deployed senior leaders to the counting centers, as the outcome will reshape the political landscape of such states in the next five years. Many high-profile contests combined with high voter turnout have made this one of the most significant electoral events of 2026.
