Prime minister Narendra Modi has described the track record of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to have nine consecutive Union Budgets as a national pride and historic achievement in the history of the Indian parliament. During a PTI interview on February 15, 2026, Modi mentioned the fact that it is not only another landmark but also demoralization of women in the nation.
Sitharaman was the first woman in history whose Union Budget, the 2026-27 budget, became available on February 1, 2026, it was the 9 th consecutive Union Budget under the Modi government. This is also her first female Finance Minister to do so, and the only woman FM to introduce nine budgets in a row. She has now come within 1 of the all-time list of 10 budgets made by previous PM Morarji Desai (not consecutive). The previous Finance Ministers such as P. Chidambaram put forward nine budgets not consecutively.
Actually, she said it is more of a national pride that our Finance Minister, Nirmala Ji has given the Budget nine consecutive times, a record and pride in itself. He brought out the way this achievement encourages women across diverse areas, including space and startups to economy and leadership. Privy to his vision of a women playing a central role in the creation of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India), several women are inspired by the feat across India, he added.
By January 31, 2026, Sitharaman who assumed office of Finance in May 2019, had served six years and eight months by the time she reached the first year in office. Her rule has been marked by a steady emphasis on financial prudence, growth-focused reform football, female empowerment policy and infrastructure drive against global interests. Budgeting nine successive budgets explains the stability of the Modi government and confidence in her government.
The PM was also making these comments during the debate on how the Budget affected real estate, urban development, and inclusive growth. This commendation explains the symbolism of a woman heading the financial policy of the country in close to seven years, to disrupt the typical male-dominated field.
This has been much hailed as an experiment of the increased place of women in government. With India on its developmental path, the history of Sitharaman is a timeless mark of professional commitment, a vision and hardiness.
