From April 16 to 18, 2026, the Indian government has convened a hastened Parliament session to amend the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam (Women Reservation Act, 2023). Its main objective is to enforce a 33% quota of women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies before the 2029 general elections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called the session a historic move towards finally ending decades of waiting and empowering Indian democracy with more women's participation. The proposed amendments to the constitution entail strengthening of the Lok Sabha (which could be increased to 816-850 seats) and delimitation to be conducted to include the quota as well.
The ruling party, BJP, and opposition parties such as the Congress have also given out whips that make sure that the MPs show up. Although the government focuses on dialogue and consensus on the issue of how the delimitation process must be carried out and what effects it will have on regional representation, there are concerns.
A win at this session might be a significant milestone in the history of women-led development, where millions of women will be empowered and political representation in India will be transformed over the coming years. Whether this transformative reform will gain the consent of the people will be seen in coming days.
