Your reading matter for this day, 11 May 2026, is today's first cabinet meeting by the new Chief Minister of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, who announced, in the first cabinet meeting, six big decisions for a governance reset and achieving the promises made in the polls.
Key announcements include the following:
- Around 600 acres of land are being transferred to BSF, and it will take around 45 days for their job to finish the completion of the India-Bangladesh border fencing.
- Immediate rollout of Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) health insurance scheme and other central schemes like PM Vishwakarma, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and Ujjwala.
- Initiating the national Census operation in the state as soon as possible.
- Lenience in the age criteria for those desiring government jobs in the past years but could not avail themselves of the benefit.
- Facilitating IAS officers, IPS officers, and state officers for training in other states.
- Adopting Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) instead of using the old IPC/CrPC.
The government has also promised assistance to the families of the dead BJP employees in the violence. The rapid decisions also represent a historic policy change where cooperation between the center and the state and the security and welfare of Bengalis will be enhanced.
