In a historic moment for Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the chief minister on May 10, 2026. Vijay claimed a massive 37% of the votes in a stunning win for the party of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), taking the oath of office and the seal of secrecy at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai from the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.
The ‘Thalapathy' of the films became the ‘Thalapathi' of the nation after thousands of supporters waved him or her goodbye from the movie screen and saw him or her ascend to the highest political position in the state. He was also followed by several of the leaders of TV who had been sworn in as ministers.
Celebrities such as Kamal Haasan, Pawan Kalyan, and R. Madhavan congratulated the new CM. Vijay, in his maiden speech, had promised the government to be a government of social justice, secularism, and people-oriented development.
It is the first government to be formed by a party other than the Dravidian ones in Tamil Nadu in nearly six decades. The swearing-in ceremony has been met with wholesome fun by the virtuous people of the state as Vijay becomes the “people's leader."
In the coming days, the new CM is likely to declare some important welfare measures.
