On March 19, 2026, President Donald Trump stirred pharmaceutical speculation and online abuzzing with the news when he joked about the 1941 Pearl Harbor assault by Japan at the White House at a bilateral meeting with the Japanese prime minister, Sanae Takaichi. In reply to the question posed to Trump by a reporter concerning the reason the U.S. did not notify their allies first, Trump justified the aspect of surprise by stating that they went in very hard and had no intention of notifying anybody about it, citing that they wanted to have the element of surprise. No one is more familiar with the concept of surprise than Japan. Why did you not tell me about Pearl Harbor, OK?
The room was embarrassingly quiet, but the smile faded and her eyes began to widen, and the motionless Takiichi began her uncomfortable fidgeting in her seat. Her dazed expression was filmed and spread across the media like CNN, NBC, and social networks. Trump made another sarcastic remark, although the remark was met with mixed reactions: some people regarded it as typical Trump humor, whereas others considered it to be insensitive due to the historical tragedy that claimed the lives of more than 2,300 Americans and brought the U.S. to WWII.
The scene emphasizes the continuation of diplomacy during the Iran war, and later Takiichi commends bilateral relations despite the heated dialogue.
