However, as a comment on the BJP's historic victory in the Western Bengal Assembly elections 2026, former Norwegian diplomat Erik Solheim saluted PM Narendra Modi, saying, "What revenge!"
Earlier, the former Norwegian environment minister and peace negotiator, who has in France noted Modi's positive contribution to the BJP, had applauded the BJP for the wonderful job done by Modi at the time of the party's recent successful election campaign. He noted that with comparatively "low" expectations in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP has won stellar results in many states, including West Bengal.
“With an overwhelming win over the Congress, Prime Minister Modi has earned a ‘big victory': What revenge!" India's democracy is strong and facing challenges in Europe and the US; how it's performing is something the West must appreciate," Solheim wrote.
The comments come amidst the BJP's record winning in Bengal, which finally brought an end to years of the domination of the Tamil Maidhuvam (TM) and signified a huge change in politics in the eastern state. Solheim's words have made headlines because of her unapologetic celebration of Modi's vast popularity.
