When Rana tried taking a sweep shot during the 10th over when it was bowled by Noor Ahmad, he was caught at backward square leg. The balls on the stumps were observed to have been knocked loose, eliciting huge debate on social media and claims of double-wicket.
However, on-field umpires and the third umpire reviewed the dismissal. Replays revealed that the bat or body of Rana never hit the stumps when the ball was in play. Strong winds (following heavy rain) or incidental contact by the wicketkeeper following a completed catch should have disturbed the bails, most likely.
According to the MCC Laws, to be able to dismiss the batter on a hit-wicket, the batter must break the wicket when dealing with the ball. Nobody saw this occurring; hence, the official decision got caught out.
The event has spread virally but is still a scenario of confusing optics rather than a real rare dismissal.
