The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also introduced a highly new policy that prohibits transgender women from participating in women's events in the Olympic Games and other IOC events beginning with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
With the Policy on the Protection of the Female (Women) Category, biological females can now strictly qualify in the category of females in either individual or team sports. This will be established by a compulsory, once-only screening of the SRY gene (a type of DNA test usually performed by saliva, cheek swab, or blood).
The IOC claims that the objective of the move is to protect equity, safety, and integrity of women in sports because of retained physical advantages in men of strength, power, and endurance in female sports. The policy does not take place retroactively, and it has no effect on grassroots and recreational sports. It also affects some sportsmen with Differences of Sex Development (DSD).
Even the small margins count in the Olympics, as pointed out by IOC President Kirsty Coventry, as it is not right to place biological males in the female competition category. The ruling is in line with increased attention in the world on sex-based classifications in elite sport.
