Miami: So weird, so uncomfortable, a seemingly minor incident took center stage in Jannik Sinner's fourth-round match with Alex Michelsen of the Miami Open.
As the match was in a draw at 4-4 in the first set, Michelsen delivered a ball that landed just in front of the net in a short position. Sinner rushed on and struck with a strong cross-court smash. But, rather than flying over to an open court, the ball had gone right into Michelsen, turning his back, and hit his racket in full view.
Play stopped momentarily as Michelsen looked shocked. Nobody could have been more sporting than Siner rushing to the net and apologizing to his opponent. The two talked, Sinner putting a hand on Michelsen in a cordial gesture.
The point was called in Sinners' favor even after he hit the racket and the ball bounced out. Sinner finally survived an arduous encounter with the young American to make it to the quarter-finals.
The viral clip put emphasis on the oneness of the rally and reverence amongst players.
