The development occurred on April 6-7, 2026, with the chief executive officer of Air India, Campbell Wilson, resigning. Currently serving his time, facing a notice period after joining the airline in 2022 following a long tenure at Singapore Airlines, Wilson is continuing his tenure pending some replacement being established to facilitate a smooth transfer.
This is the resignation of Air India, which is struggling with ongoing losses in the air and increased regulation after the tragic crash of June 2025 that already took away 260 lives. The majority owner, Tata Group, had been contemplating matters of succession as early as early 2026 on account of the rate of change.
The five-year tenure of Wilson was expected to terminate in mid-2027. His departure is a critical period in the airline because it is still modernizing its fleet, expanding its network, and upgrading its services under the Vihaan.AI initiative.
Chairman of Tata Sons N Chandrasekaran will presumably be instrumental in the choice of the next CEO. Industry observers conjecture that the new leader may introduce new global experience to speed up the revitalization of Air India and enable it to compete in both the domestic and international markets in a better manner. The search process is on, and more announcements are expected to be made in the near future.
