Varanasi, the grand Indian movie by one of the most successful directors, SS Rajamouli (RRR, Baahubali), is a grand Indian movie that Priyanka Chopra Jonas is making a grand comeback in. It is her first major Indian role and Telugu debut in the film since 2019 in The Sky Is Pink. During recent interviews to market The Bluff, Priyanka explained that Varanasi was a really career-defining moment in her life and talked highly of Rajamouli as one of the best film directors in India and how excited she was to work on the film.

The action-adventure is an epic in which Mahesh Babu plays the role of Rudhra, who is a Shiva devotee that embarks on an unexplored mission to search for an ancient heavenly weapon as Varanasi faces a possible asteroid impact. Priyanka and Prithviraj Sukumaran are the stars who play the roles of a mysterious thief, Mandakini, and the villain, Kumbha, respectively. It travels between various timelines and various continents with enormous stunts, song/dance, and shooting in different places, one of them being the African savannah in Kenya, where Priyanka has also had an equally memorable Lion King-like experience with thousands of wildebeest.

The initial teaser, in the Dolby Cinema version, has created a huge hype with a typical grand vision of Rajamouli with solid production values (the budget is reported to be 150 million dollars), and it makes it one of the most expensive films ever produced in India. MM Keeravani has music that is sure to take the spectacle to the next level.

Priyanka, who is picky after the success of Hollywood (Quantico, Citadel), reportedly accepted the project according to her terms, as in the previous stages of Hindi filmmaking she felt restrained. The movie honors her origins as it goes international, which is also in line with her cross-cultural career.

Varanasi is a film planned to be released internationally on April 7, 2027 (during the Ugadi festival), and it will be produced by Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business. It has the star power, the visionary direction, and the epic scale, so it will become a landmark of Indian movie making—the successful comeback of Priyanka can define her career.
