Coffee is the most widely consumed drink and also for many, the most favorite beverages accessible worldwide. It has many benefits but contradictory research also shown few evidences for both coffee’s benefits and risks.

Recently, a new study finds a link between drinking coffee of any type and a reduce risk of liver problems.

It finds that regular 3-4 cups of coffee consumption of any type like caffeinated, decaffeinated, ground or instant, protects liver from many scary liver problems including cancer. Ground coffee is found slightly to be more beneficial than instant coffee.

This is now a good news especially for those, who could not take their life without a cup of coffee

What study says about the Link between the two?

Chronic liver disease is a major health problems globally, including 2 million deaths annually. Among them, 1 million people dying because of cirrhosis and another from viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma. These complications occurs due to many factors like consuming alcohol, diabetes or having overweight.

Liver problems are big especially in low income countries, as medical facilities are less available there, so these findings are very much helpful in these countries. According to study, coffee is widely available, safe and well tolerant for most of the people and are cheap, which can be easily affordable and seems to be protective.

A 10.7-year study analyzed data from UK Biobank health of nearly 500,000 people from age between 40-69 years of age, which finds that drinking any coffee including caffeinated, decaffeinated, ground, and instant coffee, significantly lowers the risk of developing liver disease i.e. all kinds of coffee shows health benefits.

Out of these people, 384,818 were coffee drinkers consumed caffeinated, decaffeinated, ground, and instant coffee and 109,767 were non-coffee drinker.

During the study, the sample found to contain 3,600 diagnoses of chronic liver disease, 5,439 cases of chronic liver disease or fatty liver disease, 184 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma and 301 deaths from chronic liver disease.

When coffee drinkers are compared with those who did not consume coffee, the study finds:

21% lower risk of chronic liver disease, 19% reduced risk of developing chronic liver or fatty liver disease, 21% lower risk of hepatocellular carcinoma and 49% less likely to die from liver disease in coffee drinkers than those who do not drink coffee.

It is also observed that people who drank coffee from ground beans, the reduction in risk was greater. In these people, the risk of developing chronic liver disease or chronic liver or fatty liver disease was reduced by 35%, and by 34% reduced risk for hepatocellular carcinoma and by 61% of dying of liver disease.

According to the scientist at the Universities of Southampton and Edinburgh, UK, found that drinking any type of coffee reduce the risk of developing and dying from chronic liver disease.

Previous research also finds the health benefits of coffee. It is considered to be healthiest drink, which are rich in antioxidants and many nutrients, beneficial in several diseases.

Although, the study has limitation and cannot prove that coffee itself reduce the risk of chronic liver problems and also it is not yet clear, how coffee protect liver, as it contains many different chemical compounds, and which one is effective. But as of now, coffee is considered as an effective remedy for all liver disease.

So, overall this is good news  for those who take coffee regular. The most exciting thing is that it protects fatty liver. People with fatty liver are at greater risk of liver cancer and no medication are available for its treatment yet. Coffee, on the other hand, can be helpful to protect liver from such problems. However, it is advisable that people should not improve their liver health by consuming only coffee but it is important to cut the intake of alcohol and increase nutritious diet also.
