Why People are Skipping Second Dose of Vaccination

Many people who got the first shot of vaccine have skipped the second shot with the understanding that first dose is sufficient to build up the immunity and fight against Covid-19.

No doubt, Covid-19 vaccines shows high effectiveness after the first dose but if people are not getting full dose of vaccine, it might impact the effectiveness of the vaccine. According to the study, 8% of people are missing their second dose.

Currently it is strongly recommended by many health authorities, single shot of vaccine is not sufficient to build up the enough immunity to fight and protect from Covid-19 infection.

Why both the shots of Vaccination are important?

Some COVID-19 vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require two doses because the first dose gives weak response than the second dose, so it is important to get both the doses of these vaccines. Research during the trial phase for each of the two-dose vaccines showed that, the first dose of the vaccine starts the process of building up the protection but the second dose helped boost the immunity to higher rates.

According to CDC, both the dose of vaccine provides better and more effectiveness than only from the single shot, as effectiveness jumped to more than 90% in two weeks after the second  dose.

What happens if you skip the second Dose of Vaccine?

The second dose is also called as "booster dose" which itself explains it boosts the immunity.

  • According to the experts, skipping the second dose may reduce the efficacy and the lifespan of your immunity.
  • The other consequences of skipping the dose is that you are less protected i.e. you can get infected with the worse symptoms, as single dose does not induce strong immunity, said by doctors.

It is advisable to those who skipped the second dose, should take an appointment from the doctor and get the second shot. It can be delayed for few days but cannot be skipped.

The Bottom Line

According to CDC, People should get both the doses of vaccine to get the strong immunity and best protection against the coronavirus.
