Maharashtra Police have arrested a 19-year-old, Mohammad Ayaz, alias Tanveer or Ayan Ahmed Tanveer, who lived in Paratwada in the Amravati district and is accused of having engaged in sexual exploitation of at least 180 minor girls and made more than 350 obscene videos of himself.
Police claimed that Ayaz used WhatsApp and Snapchat, impressing the girls with fake romantic relationships, which is considered a love trap by the police. Then he took them to various places, among them a flat at Paratwada (said to be the epicenter), cafes in various towns, and a hill station resort at Chikhaldara, where it is claimed that they were abused.
The videos were alleged to be blackmailed to manipulate victims and even compel some to be exploited further. A complaint by a BJP MP was promptly responded to by police, who found a large amount of digital evidence. The police have taken Ayaz into custody, and the police have destroyed the unlawful parts of his property. Additional investigations are in progress to establish all the victims and potential co-conspirators, with calls to the families encouraged in the name of guaranteed confidentiality. The case has caused a massive uproar over child safety and misuse of social media.
