Four Republican lawmakers voted against President Donald Trump on Tuesday by breaking ranks with the rest of the party to support a bill to force him on the Iran issue to come before the Senate floor for a 50-47 vote—an unusual but significant cross-partisan show.

Sens. Its supporters, who include Rand Paul (Kentucky), Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), and Bill Cassidy (Louisiana), are seeking to force the administration to end the conflict with Iran or get official authorization from Congress.

It's the first time the resolution has made it through the House floor and represents a heightened level of concern of some Republican members about the length of the war. Cassidy's support arrived days after losing his primary, which Trump supported.

The rare defection has brought sharp divisions among GOP war hawks about Trump’s treatment of the Iran war to the fore, but the resolution moves a significant step closer to law than it was when first drafted by the Senate. Democrats called it an accomplishment in the legislative shadow-boxing battle to oversee government, but the White House condemned it as a threat to national security. The development continues to be top news for politics, too.
