Ahead of the second and final phase of West Bengal Assembly elections scheduled for April 29, 2026, on Sunday, Kolkata Police seized at least 79 crude bombs from the house of Rafikul Islam, an alleged Trinamool Congress worker, from Bhangar in South 24 Parganas.
The explosives, including round balls bound with jute ropes, and 3.37 kg of gunpowder, sulfur, and other chemicals were recovered from an empty house near a graveyard on the basis of intelligence. The Bomb Disposal Squad helped in the process.
The BJP immediately released the videos of the bomb seizure, claiming it as proof of the TMC's alleged role in violence and intimidation during poll times. The Election Commission has ordered a special drive to catch bomb makers in the state and has threatened to take stringent measures.
The Union Home Ministry has referred the matter to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has opened a case over possible terror links and unauthorized possession of explosives to spread terror among people. Further investigation is underway.
