The Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government on August 7, 2026, removed Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar from his post. DIG Border Range Harmanbir Singh has been given additional charge as the new commissioner, while Bhullar has been directed to report to the DGP’s office pending further orders.

The transfer comes days after Bhullar announced the busting of an alleged Pakistan-based ISI-backed terror module. Police arrested nine people, including four minors, and recovered three pistols, live cartridges and petrol bombs. During an August 4 briefing, Bhullar stated that some accused had visited Jantar Mantar, conducted reconnaissance and planned to target security personnel or disrupt the protest site with petrol bombs.

Punjab Police later clarified that the remarks did not link the protesters themselves to the module and accused some social media posts of circulating edited clips. The BJP has questioned the timing of the transfer, alleging it was linked to the revelations. The state government has described the move as administrative.
