It is speculated, following media coverage and employee discussion forums such as Blind, that Amazon might lay off approximately 14,000 corporate workers as soon as May 2026, which could include business functions such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), retail business, and human resources.
This would be after about 16,000 layoffs that the company confirmed in January 2026 and a group of about 14,000 previous cuts in late 2025, which would put the total at nearly 30,000 in recent months as part of a wider movement towards reducing bureaucracy and heavily investing in AI.
However, Amazon has categorically denied the May layoff reports. One of the company representatives in the statements of several media outlets was quoted saying that these were baseless and fabricated reports and that it had no such plan in the works.
The tech giant is still in the process of organizational transformation to help it be more lean and selective in hiring in strategic areas such as artificial intelligence. There is a paranoia among the employees due to constant restructuring whereby a lot of the employees have been scrupulous in watching internal communications.
As of April 9, 2026, no official word has been released on new cuts.
