Anil Ambani, an industrialist, has sued journalist Arnab Goswami, Republic TV, and its parent company, ARG Outlier, in a defamation case in the Bombay High Court, in a major legal explosion. The petition is asking for the temporary injunction to stop the channel from broadcasting or publishing any more so-called defamatory content in relation to the financial transactions done by Ambani.
According to Ambani, the recurring coverage and publications by Republic TV associating him with investigations about the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which involve Reliance Communications, Reliance Home Finance, and other organizations, have led to a reputation that cannot be undone. He claims that the coverage was received even after he resigned major positions in 2019.
The suit also describes the unknown participants that posted the content in news channels and other social media sites by the name "John Doe." The application to obtain interim relief will be heard by Justice Milind Jadhav, probably, on April 1, 2026.
This has been attracting a lot of attention in terms of media and business; there is an ongoing conflict between big business personalities and the alarmist news stations regarding the coverage of corporate and various regulatory issues. The case highlights that the defamation suits are increasingly being used in India to deal with perceived media excess.
