Bank Clarifies After Odisha Man Brings Sister’s Skeleton: “We Only Asked for Death Certificate, Not Her Body!”

Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) sponsored Odisha Grameen Bank has released a statement in this regard after Jitu Munda, a tribal man, brought his late sister Kalra Munda's skeleton to the Maliposi branch in Keonjhar district to withdraw about ₹19,300-20,000 from the account.

The bank said, in a statement, that it was incorrect that bank staff had told Munda to "bring the account holder." It pointed out branch officials explained the account of a deceased person can only be settled with the requisite documents, such as a death certificate and legal heir certificate. The man first approached the bank on April 27 and returned with the exhumed corpse following frustration and an ignorance of banking norms.

The local administration is now expediting the issuance of the death and legal heir certificates to enable Munda to receive his money. Police have also offered help, and the bank has committed to fast-tracking the claim.

The bizarre case has also raised some questions about financial awareness in rural and tribal regions.
