Indian Railways has made significant revisions to the rules of cancellation and refund of tickets on the trains, which will be implemented in stages between April 1 and April 15, 2026. The amendments, declared by the railway minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, will help deter black marketing and make seats available to the real passengers.
In accordance with new standards in confirmed tickets:
- Cancellation greater than 72 hrs prior to departure: Full refund, less only the available flat cancellation charge (according to class, e.g., 240 in AC First, 60 in Second Class).
- 25% of the fare is deducted (with a minimum flat charge) between 72 and 24 hours.
- Between 24 and 8 hours: 50% deduction of fare (minimum).
- Fewer than 8 hours prior to travel: No refunds allowed.
The maximum period of full refunds has been expanded to 72 hours. These will be e-tickets and I-tickets. It is recommended that passengers book travels ahead of time and cancel so as to lose little money. Other special classes such as Tatkal can have different guidelines. The system will be updated accordingly by IRCTC and railway authorities.
