New York/Chennai: Global IT services giant Cognizant is gearing towards a drastic workforce cut of about 15,000 employees worldwide, with sources stating that most of the layoffs will be made in India.

The company with over 340,000 global employees and a large pool in India (particularly in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Pune) is in the process of conducting this exercise to cut costs and enhance margins in the face of slowing demand and increased competition due to AI automation.

Reports indicate that the layoff might commence within the next few weeks and will mostly affect mid-level and senior positions in some delivery and support functions.

Cognizant is yet to release an official statement, but already employees receive internal communication on the topic of performance reviews and possible exits.

This move is on top of an already growing worry regarding job security within the Indian IT sector, following other comparable cost-optimizing acts within other Tier-1 companies in 2025-26.
