A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on the morning of 10 August 2026, killing at least 132 people and injuring more than 500.

The quake, centred near San José del Palmar in Chocó province at a depth of about 103 km, is described as Colombia’s strongest in the 21st century. It was widely felt across the country and in neighbouring Ecuador and Panama.

The worst damage occurred in the coffee-growing city of Pereira, where dozens died and many buildings collapsed. Cali, Manizales and other towns also reported significant destruction, with over 1,500 structures damaged and more than 60 completely destroyed.

Newly inaugurated President Abelardo de la Espriella declared a national emergency as rescue teams searched rubble for survivors. Aftershocks followed, and several airports suspended operations. Hospitals were placed on high alert while international offers of assistance poured in. The death toll is expected to rise as recovery efforts continue.
