Fukushima, Japan: Shivering netizens have been left stunned that a mummified half-fish, half-human mermaid was found at an old house. The hideous bodies are those of a humanoid with a high body, sharp teeth, oversize claw-like hands, and a fish body with scales and a tail and fins attached all around.

The sample, which is thought to represent a kappa, a Japanese folklore waterside demon, which usually dwells in ponds and rivers, was recently up for auction, where the bid is projected to hit approximately 11,755 (in Indian rupees, 14 lakh).

Images of the animal that was lying on cushions have become not only massively viral but have also revealed its creepy skeletal properties as well as its leathery skin. Although some may hypothesize that it is perhaps an elaborate hoax or a regional yokai artifact popular during the Edo era, others are attracted by the fact that it has a possible cultural meaning.

According to experts, such creations were traditionally made of animal remains or carved as curios to take advantage of the legends of ningyo or kappa, which were occasionally ascribed to lifespan or magic. It is awaited to be scientifically examined in order to ascertain its exact composition and age.
