The Delhi High Court on Sunday rejected the plea filed by Gitanjali J. Angmo, wife of Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, seeking his transfer from Safdarjung Hospital to a private medical facility. The court observed that the government was “within its right” to shift him and that no interim order was required at this stage.

Wangchuk’s health had deteriorated due to an extended hunger strike protesting issues including alleged NEET irregularities, rising education costs, and student suicides. He was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital by authorities following medical advice. His wife alleged unlawful detention and demanded family consent for treatment, moving the court for relief.

Justice Mini Pushkarna issued notice to the Centre, Safdarjung Hospital, and Delhi Police but refused immediate transfer, emphasizing the government’s decision was not arbitrary. The ruling comes amid heightened tensions as supporters plan further protests and a march to Parliament. Wangchuk remains under medical observation at the government facility.
