The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is tightening enforcement of the long-standing rule on mobile connections. From August 24, 2026, telecom operators must deny new SIM cards to anyone who already holds nine mobile numbers in their name.

This limit of nine connections applies across all telecom service providers (Airtel, Jio, Vi, BSNL, etc.) and all licensed service areas in most of India. It is not nine per operator. In Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and the North-Eastern states, the ceiling is lower at six connections.

Operators will use the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) and subscriber photographs to identify people who have reached the limit and refuse further activations. The rule, originally issued in 2012, aims to curb misuse of SIMs in fraud and cybercrime.

If you already have nine or more numbers, you cannot get a new one until you surrender the excess. Check your connections and stay compliant to avoid issues.
