Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Uttar Pradesh’s longest greenfield expressway—the 594 km-long Ganga Expressway—on April 29, 2016. The access-controlled greenfield expressway runs from Meerut to Prayagraj (near the sacred city of Allahabad), alongside the River Ganga.

Uttar Pradesh's 12 districts include:

• Meerut
• Hapur
• Bulandshahr
• Amroha
• Sambhal
• Budaun (Badaun)
• Shahjahanpur
• Hardoi
• Unnao
• Raebareli
• Pratapgarh
• Prayagraj

This expressway will connect large towns and cities, including Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, and Prayagraj. The expressway is also connected to other highways through interchanges, such as those leading to Kanpur.

When completed, the Ganga Expressway will reduce the distance between Meerut and Prayagraj from 10-12 hours to around 6 hours. The expressway promises to promote economic development, including industrial and tourism industries in the western, central, and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh. Future plans also include development of the expressway in Phase-2 direction towards Haridwar and Ballia/Varanasi.
