Google I/O 2026 was the announcement of what Google refers to as the largest change in its search box in more than 25 years. Google Search is enhanced with the new intelligent search box powered by AI and Flash's Gemini 3.5.

The redesigned box will automatically extend the length of the box to accommodate more natural query types that involve conversation. Users now have the ability to place text, pictures, files, or videos or even open tabs in Chrome, and the smart AI suggestions exceed the capabilities of a standard autofill feature.

The aim of this huge rewrite is to enhance the intuitive and seamless nature of search and incorporate high-level AI reasoning into search results. It also presents “information agents," which are proactively able to observe certain topics and notify the user whenever there are updates.

This change is underway and represents a significant shift in the traditional method of “ten blue links” search to more conversational and multimodal search. It's a positive advancement for users, but it's also triggered worries for publishers about a decline in site traffic with richer on-page AI responses.
