Harish Rana, who received passive euthanasia honorably by the Supreme Court in India, died his natural death on a peaceful deathbed on Tuesday, 24 March, 2026, at AIIMS Delhi at approximately 4.10 PM. The Ghaziabad resident, 31 years old, has been in a permanent vegetative state for more than 13 years since he fell off the fourth-floor balcony of a hostel when he was a B.Tech student at Panjab University in 2013.

After the historic Supreme Court decision in an appeal on March 11, 2026, in his favor on the right to die with dignity, Rana was transferred to the palliative unit at AIIMS on March 14. Medical practitioners gradually pulled back artificial feeding and hydration as per the court. There was his family at the time of his death.

The case that brought back a sterling debate in the country over end-of-life decision-making, passive euthanasia, and the right to dignity has an influential precedent. The death of Harish Rana leads to the end of a lengthy legal and emotional struggle contributed to by his parents, who were in need of escape from the endless pain. Its implication on future cases within the country is receiving the keen attention of medical experts and legal observers.
