The Andhra Pradesh government has now given the green light to a project worth 3.5 crore to develop a modern food testing and quality control laboratory within the compound of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). The facility is planned to commence on February 28, 2026, with the purpose of scientifically overseeing and guaranteeing the total safety, purification, and nutritional value of the religious prasadam, particularly the world-renowned Tirupati laddu, used to serve its 80,000-1,000,000 faithful every day.

The suggested lab will be outfitted with modern analytical tools such as

  • High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) of adulterants and pesticides.
  • Microbial and chemical contaminants: Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).
  • Quick and instant aflatoxin and heavy metal analysis kits.
  • Pathogen (E. coli, Salmonella, etc.) microbiological test packages.
  • Tools of nutritional profiling.

According to the TTD officials, real-time testing of raw material (rice, ghee, sugar, cardamom, cashew, etc.), cooking procedures, storage facilities, and complete batches of finished prasadam will be undertaken at the lab before dispensing. The shift is preceded by occasional public issues, a quick cause of concern, in food adulteration and hygiene in large-scale temple kitchens despite the TTD already using quality protocols.

According to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, it was a historic move towards the combination of the old with modern science, and it was time that devotees should be getting prasadam that is not only spiritually clean but also physically safe. It shall take a period of 12-18 months to get the project operational, and it shall be guided by a special team of food technologists, chemists, and microbiologists under the supervision of TTD.

The project is part of the general movement of food safety in religious and governmental organizations in the state. It further makes Tirupati an example to other big temples in India. Religious people and food safety professionals rejoiced with the ruling, with most referring to it as Holy Food Surveillance that safeguards not only faith but health as well.

This investment is an affirmation by the government that it will continue to embrace the sanctity and reliability of one of the most sacred of foods in Hinduism, prasadam.
