On April 14, 2026, a huge boiler explosion took place in a thermal power plant owned by Vedanta Limited in Singhitarai village of Sakti district, Chhattisgarh, resulting in a major industrial catastrophe of that time. At least nine lives have been lost in the blast that occurred at about 2:30 PM in a high-pressure boiler tube that feeds the turbine, although there are reports that the number of dead people has reached 14 at least. The number of workers injured has been 15 to 50, with most being severely burnt.
Top police officials such as Sakti SP Praful Thakur and the district collector verified the incident and added that rescue operations were being undertaken by local teams and medical personnel. A number of the wounded were taken to hospitals near the attack in order to be treated.
The reason behind the explosion remains unknown, but a thorough investigation has been commissioned. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 to the injured.
This accident has brought some safety issues regarding safety measures in large industrial units in the area, once again. Vedanta has issued an apology and promised maximum cooperation with the government.
